Parish | The Altar

Our altar and the statues of Saints Peter and Paul originally graced the Chapel of the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, built in 1929 and located at City Line Avenue and Haverford Road, in Lower Merion Township. In 1978, the school moved to its present location in Bryn Mawr, and Father Kovacs - the Pastor of Saints Peter and Paul - obtained these treasures for our parish.

Our altar, made of Italian Tavernelle marble, incorporates six hand-carved statues of the saints in full relief. These statues are 18 inches high. Three panels of Gothic tracing separate the four statues across the front of the altar.

The saints represented were founders of religious orders:

  1. St. Vincent de Paul (Vincentians)
  2. St. Bernard (Cistercians)
  3. St. Francis (Franciscans)
  4. St. Ignatius Loyala (Jesuits)
  5. St. Benedict (Benedictines)
  6. St. Dominic (Dominicans)

The statues of Saints Peter and Paul, measuring 42 inches in height, located in front of our Church, are made of Vatican Stone.
